Civil War Arkansas Currency

A piece of pre-Reconstruction Era Arkansas history. A treasury warrant is a piece of paper that says the government promises to pay a certain amount of money to someone.

Signed  April 3, 1863 by State Treasurer, Leroy B. Cunningham, the last state appointed treasurer who served from 1862-1864. The following year Arkansas’ government ratified a new constitution to ensure recognition and financial support from the federal government.

The warrant features a portrait of former State Treasurer, Samuel Adams, in a frame on a bookshelf. A side vignette depicts a slave carrying a basket alongside a field.
